03"Praise God, from Whom all blessings flow." -Doxology
I have started to speak Gratitude lately. It takes some work but once you get rolling, it's really a thrilling language. You notice things that would go unnoticed in your native tongue. Here is my list for this week:
0016. Guacamole. Freshly made, especially when it has that crazy cheese sprinkled on top (what is that stuff and where can I get it?).
0017. Big fluffy clouds rimmed with sunshine after a rain.
0018. Spaghetti, garlic bread, and salad. My favorite meal.
0019. Twirling the spaghetti noodles on my fork. Challenging AND exciting.
0020. The zoo. Any zoo.
0021. Snake plants and spider plants. I don't know what their official names are, but pretty much any house plant that can survive without water for a long period of time is my friend.
0022. Old playgrounds with extremely dangerous and unique equipment. Sure, you might break your arm, but spinning tetertotters shaped like giraffes make it so worth it, right?
0023. My two year old, who gives loud, smacking kisses emphasised with a "MWAH!" and mutters "I can do it" under his breath as he goes through his day, tackling tall chairs and impossibly high light switches.
0024. Babies who proudly display bits of rice puffs on their chin while eating. A rice puff goatee never goes out of style.
0025. Family stories you have heard told a million times ("the day you were born...").
0026. Family stories you have heard for the first time ("You had an Uncle named Tack...").
0027. People who name their son "Tack".
0028. Explaining why snails are slimy. I don't know exactly why. The fact is God made them slimy for His own pleasure, and I like to think he had a good laugh about it. I would actually like snails, with their searching, blind-looking antennae and their easy to grasp, non-slimy shells. But, they eat my flowers, so...they don't make the list.
0029. Snails. I changed my mind, they make the list. I'm thankful to have a complex love/hate relationship with snails...it's those little things that make life rich and full.
0030. The smell of clay. It smells like deep earth and Tolkien waters. I feel close to hobbits when I smell it.
0031. Spellcheck. Even though it tries to embarrass me by ignoring the fact that I wrote 'worm' instead of 'warm'.
0032. Typewriters. They smell like oil and ink, their rhythmic sound is comforting and thrilling, and they get nice and warm after being on for a time. They used to be mundane, but now they are rare, like rotary phones. Also, they don't have spell check, so you can only blame yourself for spelling errors and mistypes. Accountability!
0033. Rotary phones. You could stick a crayon in the holes to dial, they made a nice whirring sound to confirm your intentions, and the cord was fun to wrap around your fingers.0034. Messages in bottles. When I was young, I truly believed there was one on every beach. Let's all throw one out to sea this week!
"Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow" James 1:17
