I think my Christian walk can be summarized by this passage I found while reading Winnie-the-Pooh to my kids:
"Hallo, Rabbit," he said, "is that you?"
"Let's pretend it isn't," said Rabbit, "and see what happens".
I'm always trying to pretend I'm someone I'm not. I try to pretend to be great and perfect and wonderful...on my own. I forget who I really am without Christ.
In reality I am a child of wrath (Ephesians 2:3), incapable of doing good.
"All have sinned and fall short of the glory of God" (Romans 3:23)
What do I try to do when I'm faced with this reality of sinfulness? I try to be good of course. And that's impossible. So I pretend and "see what happens".
And the worst part? When I fail to claim my unrighteousness I am rejecting Christ and His sacrifice for me, because He did it for the unrighteous. "Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that He might bring us to God" (1 Peter 3:18).
"The main thing seperating you and God is not your sins, but your damnable good works."
-Tim Keller
I have realized that once I embrace the fact that I am a sinner, incapable of any good on my own, I find forgiveness and I don't have to worry about my sin anymore. "Repent therefore, and turn again, that your sins may be blotted out" (Acts 3:19).
"We must believe in Jesus and receive Him and turn from our sin and obey Him and humble ourselves like little children and love Him more than we love our family, our possessions, or our own life. This is what it means to be converted to Christ. This alone is the way of life everlasting"
-John Piper, Desiring God
"...whoever serves is to do so as one who is serving by the strength which God supplies; so that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belongs the glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen." (1 Peter 4:11B)
Will you join me, and stop pretending to be good, and reflect the goodness of God instead?
