Spring does crazy things to me. I found myself at the farm again.
The world smelled like livestock and flowers; a combination that can only be found in rural areas. I spent the whole day planning out my vegetable garden. I'm not sure yet where I can put a vegetable garden in my tiny yard but I have big plans. I have a few onion starts and potatoes in my backyard now, a gift from my mother. I think I may have some potato starts in my pantry too. Finally I will have a REASON for sprouting potatoes in my pantry.
I always feel like potatoes should last indefinitely, because didn't they have potato cellars in olden days? I think there was a secret passage potato cellar in a Nancy Drew book I read once, and the concept stuck with me. Maybe they sprout at my house because I lack the "cellar" part.
Anyway, I went to the country and went crazy. I came home with vegetable garden plans, a little bit of sun on my skin, two exhausted boys, and...a chicken.
I'm not exactly sure what I'm going to do with a chicken. It's very cute though, and hopefully we will develop a great relationship where I feed it and it lays eggs and eats my garden snails.
I feel potential in the breeze, and I respond to it with great schemes and plans, and now, with a chicken.
The sun is shining, and on the surface all is calm. My house is picked up but needing a deep clean. I need to go to the grocery store. My son has a cold. However, there is dirt in my back yard that sings to me, asking me to dig it up and plant treasures in it. There is a chicken in my yard that...I'm not sure what to do with. Who knows what excitement today will bring? (Hopefully not more chickens). The gift of today is renewal, fresh starts, new beginnings. That's what spring is about.
It's very exciting.
"I will listen to what God the Lord will say; he promises peace to his people, his saints- but let them not return to folly. Surely his salvation is near those who fear him, that his glory may dwell in our land. Love and faithfulness meet together; righteousness and peace kiss each other. Faithfulness springs forth from the earth, and righteousness looks down from heaven." -Psalm 85:8-11
